Being a board member is a different ball game altogether. When I joined my first board my chairperson, who was a woman, told me that this was a male dominated environment, and I must slowly ease my way into it. During my first meeting with the CIO, I was presented with a paper that I had to review before it was presented to the board. The paper had many mistakes including how the costs had been calculated and how the paper had been written. I pointed these out to the CIO and the manager who wrote the paper. I thought I was helping but the CIO’s face changed. He was upset that I had found these mistakes and highlighted them in front of his junior manager. I knew at that moment that the CIO was never going to like me, and I was right.
