Bathroom fixtures have a certain sense of timing and a wicked one at that :)
It was one such moment when we called Surya Prakash, our trusted plumber and he recommended replacing the entire mixer tap unit.
It would be useful to share a little bit about Surya. An ardent devotee of Sri Aurobindo & The Mother, he moved to Pondicherry when he was young & settled there. One could trust him to provide the correct advice balanced on cost, quality, and long-term durability.
On this particular occasion, he did his usual thorough job & yet the next morning, the tap was dripping. I called him and he came in by 1100 am and proceeded to fix the issue.
After he finished the work he said, “My job is not very complicated. It is usually pretty repetitive – Fixing a tap or replacing a valve or adding a pipe etc., Over the last 30 years, I have tried to bring in more and more perfection into my work. I treat it as my yoga sadhana, working methodically and deliberately and yet there are times like this… It teaches me about the progress that I need to make”
Surya is no more. He passed away last year due to cancer. Often, when I notice a leaky fixture, I recollect Surya’s statement. I continue to be inspired by his attitude and approach to work.
