When I was 12, a relative came to my mother and told her that it was inappropriate for me as an Arab girl to be riding my bicycle in the neighbourhood. My mum succumbed to the pressure and announced that she was not buying me a bicycle anymore. As a young girl that loved to ride her bicycle, I could not understand nor accept it and started riding my younger sister’s bicycle and on occasion borrowing the bicycles of some of the boys in the neighbourhood whenever I could. I wished at that time that I was a boy just so I can be free and ride my bike. Today, not only did I walk in one of the largest sand deserts in the world in an all-female walking team but I am the first Arab woman to be nominated on the World Triathlon Women’s Committee advocating and playing a hands-on role in encouraging and enabling women around the world to swim, bike and run. I have successfully and proudly organised the first-ever Oman Women’s Duathlon seeing many Omani women and girls just like me race on their bikes. The #LittleMeInspiringMe was working hard to ensure that no girl or woman around the world should ever wish she was a boy just to ride her bike and that sport is for all.
