In 3rd grade I had a terminally ill friend who sensitised me to other people’s feelings and struggles. I remember whenever she was forced to raise her voice in class (which she couldn’t), I would feel compelled to raise mine for her, despite knowing it would get me into trouble. During break, students would buy snacks and then play outside but she was too physically weak to join. I would run as fast as I could to the canteen to buy her snacks and then keep her company in the classroom. This was my daily adrenaline rush; the warm gratitude in her eyes engendered a devotion in me to continue to be of service to her. I was driven by feeling like a hero, thrilled to know I contributed to brightening her day. It also made me hyper aware of peoples’ energy and unspoken needs. This younger me continues to inspire me and shape the way I engage in my personal and professional life. We should identify and nurture the divine gift within us all to serve humanity. Listen and tap into your unique purpose; it is genuinely heroic to embody kindness and exercise compassion of thought and deed, even if it results in altering one person’s experience of the world as a better place.
