Life events and experiences throws the possibility of either breaking us or making us. It all depends on how we interpret, frame and internalise the situation. I will touch on two aspects of my life where I draw inspiration from self and from someone.
I grew up in a social system wherein I knew right from an early age, that I need to work hard and perform at least 2X to 3X level than my privileged colleagues to stand any chance of receivinga decent professional education and becoming something in life. At that young age, the initial reaction was to complain about unfairness in the system. However, practicality and empowerment kicked in and I went on fire to accomplish significance in education and landed my first job. My work has taken me to many countries.
Fast forward many years, I am in a familiar environment wherein certain skin colour and passport colour are more favoured than others. To make it in this world, it is time to draw inspiration from my earlier me and adapt to this environment. It is no surprise that it worked its magic again and I had a fantastic career ride in a global environment. That is the part on self inspiration.
I was fortunate to have a secured, balanced and grounded manager when I first took over team leadership. I learnt so much about leadership by watching my Manager in action. When we were to part, I thanked him for all that he contributed to shape me and asked him ,” How can I ever thank you enough for this?”. The reply was a classic ,” Go out and create more leaders as you work with people”. This is my inspiration to choose to become a Leadership Coach and do what I do now. I take immense pride and fulfilment in making others great.
