I am a #creative person at heart. At work, I’m always finding creative ways to depict the ‘usual’ that otherwise becomes mundane. My most recent attempt was with #casestudies.

Case studies, as most of you know, are important assets and a great way for people to learn from actions that have already yielded results, saving them the time they would otherwise invest in trial and error. The case was ready, and the whole problem and solution were explained in the form of a story. That got me thinking – when it’s narrated as a story, putting together a plain design would not do justice to the narrative. I tried a comic strip approach instead. Every key part of the case study was depicted using visuals. It was a trial but the output was much better than what I had anticipated it to be.

With great excitement, I hit SEND and shared it with Sripriyaa Venkataraman and Venkataraman Subramanyan. The next thing I know our client, a software development giant, loved the approach and decided to start using visual case studies as learning material in their workshops. Yet again, creativity saved the day because I dared to think #outofthebox.

Reflect on an act of creativity that propelled you. And now reflect upon how you can recreate those creative moments to handle your current uncertainties.

We always try to have value creation conversations with clients before pitching. Let me give you a reverse story to address the value creation. I had one of my team members in my previous job who came to me and said that he got me a lead and I should go meet the client. He said it was a done deal. He told the client about what we do, and they were ready to buy, so all I had to do was sell. I asked him if he knew what their problem was, and he said it didn’t matter as they were ready to buy. I went and spoke to the client and realised that it was not something they needed.

My team member heard about the call and asked me why I was shutting the door on the leads that he was trying to bring in. I told him that we don’t open doors by just closing one deal. It is easy to win a deal today and make everybody happy, but it does not create any value for the client and it’s not what they need. When I spoke to that client, I told them that this was not what they needed, and I offered them what would add value for them, and I converted it into a $300,000 deal. The client was happy and asked us to come in and do the job. They understood that I would not sell them something they didn’t need.

The whole point of my job is to create value. It doesn’t matter whether it’s $5,000 or 5 million. I need the client to remember me after the sales, after the delivery, after the payment and even after the celebration. I want to hear a good story after its been implemented. To hear the client say that the reason they are here today is because of Protiviti and because of the conversations we had with them.

I did a Masters at Stanford University in Electrical Engineering. Even back then, I took all my elective classes in humanities, sociology, philosophy and history. After that, I went to work as an Engineer in Silicon Valley. I returned to Belgium and worked as an Engineer and as a Manager, but I wasn’t feeling fulfilled in this role that I was playing. And I was seeing some people, including my girlfriend at the time, who was really loving her job. She was thriving in her job and here I was having studied at Stanford, finding myself in this situation and wondering – What am I doing here? What is the purpose of all this? How could I have more joy in my work, and also more meaning? And so that was the start of a journey that eventually led me to go for a complete change of career, and become a leadership development trainer, consultant, and coach.

I have my fair bit of exposure across the globe. And while I did try to equip myself with intercultural acclimatization courses, what I learnt working together as a team has had a huge impact on me.

Let me tell you this,” I am done” could mean completely different things for different countries. In some cases, it could mean completing the task exactly as per requirements, in other cases it could vary from a mismatch between requirements and deliverables to totally missing the expectations.

So, business leaders who get thrown amid varying cultures and backgrounds must be on top of this. They must quickly understand these, navigate smartly through the maze of intercultural differences. Simultaneously you must make yourself appealing to work with different audiences. While understanding others is key, how you make yourself adaptable and relevant will be equally important.

Back in third grade, I learned a very valuable lesson from one of my teachers. She was teaching us something very basic but I found it hard to understand. I didn’t ask her my doubts, as I thought the whole class would think I was stupid and laugh at me. Undoubtedly, I didn’t answer the question during my exams and the teacher questioned me.

When I told her why I hadn’t asked her, she told me it is better to ask and be a fool for two seconds than to remain a fool about it for my whole life. This really changed my perception and I have held that moral for my whole life. Be it at home or during an outing with friends, or in the corporate workspace, I always ask my questions on the spot. Yes, people might laugh about it but they will forget it soon.

But you won’t ever forget what you learnt at that moment and understand the concept for your whole life. Even if I am at an important client meeting and I cannot understand something simple that is being said, I still put my hand up and get it cleared once and for all. It has gained me respect and credibility at the workplace, as everything I do is based on informed decisions and complete understanding. #LittleMeInspiringMe

Every time someone presents me with a new book, I always write their name and which year they gave me the book. This practice began when I was in the fifth or sixth standard when one of my older cousins gifted me an encyclopedia. She had used it till she went to college and had given it to me with her name and year.

She told me, “Once you finish reading this, write your name and the particular year below mine and pass it on to someone else”. I really liked the idea and began to write in every book I bought or received after that. I have done this for so many people now. I love this concept because we often find books in old bookshops or libraries with scribbles in them.

We know that people have owned these books and loved them – they have left a part of themselves in the book for others to find. It almost feels like time travelling without even knowing the people who read the book before you. This is what inspired me to read more and now I have a huge bookshelf at home!

At 9:15 am everyday, 6 days a week, I recieve a call from Mrs RK, our factory production supervisor at Krya. I can set my clock by the timing of her call. On the odd day when she calls me at 09:21 am, I know there’s usually an extenuating circumstance. And yes I am talking of a delay of just 6 minutes. Well ahead of her official reporting time of 09:30 am.

Last week, I received a call at 09:10 am instead. And she began the call by asking me to wish her. It was not her birthday or wedding day. As I ran through her personal anniversaries, she gently interjected in tamizh : ” Innikku yennakku neengalum kryavum kadacha naal, maam”, which losely translates to – Today is the day I got Krya and you.

I remembered then of a day in February, when our factory was under construction. A young girl spoke to me about having married early. Having kids early. The marriage not being everything she hoped for. The college degree she could not complete. She also spoke about feeling inadequate, cash strapped, and like she would never achieve her big dreams. I then remembered the formal interview. I remember feeling like this girl was a bit over qualified for working as a simple production associate. I remember advising her to look for a higher grade job which we didn’t have at that moment, as we were starting with just 2 production associates. I lastly remember her walking away with tears in her eyes, and feeling a strange sense of regret.

Then a month later, when one of our associates quit, I asked Mrs RK if she would still be interested. She was and she came back to start work with us. I recollect explaining then, apologetically that this was a manual job and this was all we had at the moment. She gladly started.

Our operations grew. We hired more people. We then added a small supervisory layer and she became one of the 2 supervisors. She then committed, on her own, to come in earlier than everyone else to pitch into every task. She haltingly learned English. Answered customer calls. Switched on a computer and started answering emails. She built networks with our suppliers and began placing purchase orders. She attended udemy courses on managing people and even learned to write and track goals .

She was then promoted as a senior supervisor of the entire factory team. She decided to do her Bachelors in Commerce via correspondence and has completed the first 2 years. She has put 2 kids through school. Moved to her own house. Bought a bike with her earnings and holds her own in her marriage and family circle because she is employed steadily over 7 years, doing well and has a team under her.

I could go on. There is no limit to where a combination of patience, perseverance, hard work and loyalty can reach. All our limits are self made. There are many reasons to avoid being an entrepreneur. There are even more reasons to rejoice about being an Entrepreneur.

This one is at the top of my list. For the privilege of having a ring side view of a life being transformed by a person putting in extraordinary thought and effort into it. And that gives me inspiration everyday.

I have donated my hair twice so wigs can be made for cancer patients. It is a cause that is close to my heart. It is more personal than writing a cheque as you are sending a piece of yourself to a child or adult who have lost their hair to cancer. I then posted about my experience on social media. I shared the details that the Doctor in the Psycho-Oncology department told me about the dearth of wigs made with real human hair and how unaffordable it is for poor patients. I was overwhelmed with the love that friends, family and colleagues showed after reading my post. Many were inspired and wanted to donate too. Some were in their 20s, others in their 70s. A few sent me pictures of their new short hairstyles after donating. I was happy that I was able to inspire and influence others for a good cause.

Every day we indulge in acts where we have to Persuade, Influence, Negotiate or Storytell (PINS). Some are loud, some silent. Some are obvious, while others not so much. These are all ‘sales’ skills and it shows up in our behaviour. For as long as there have been people, there has been sales! No wonder it is said that #SalesSkillsAreLifeSkills #sales

Every day at home I feel like I’m a #saleswoman trying to negotiate with a somewhat rigid customer – the customer being my 6-year old son. I ask him to write number names from 1 – A10:E1050. He’s unwilling, of course. I give him a lecture on why number names are important and how writing makes his fingers strong and what not to coax him into submission. Then he says, “Alright, I’ll do it but I’ll only write from 1 – 15”. I’m in shock because that is such a bad deal. I then come down to 1 – 40. He comes up to 1 – 30. Finally, we settle.

I win because I got him to write at least that much. He wins because he got off without having to write more. It feels like a win-win. And in a few hours, we get back on the negotiation table with some other task. And then some more. I can say with utmost sincerity – I believe that #SalesSkillsAreLifeSkills.

Sripriyaa Venkataraman,

It was the year 2013, while I was busy setting up Global Coaching Lab LLP and also establishing myself as an Executive Coach.

I reached out to many people in my professional network. I informed them that I was a Certified Executive Coach and that I was establishing an organization that focused on building an expert panel of certified coaches to help address various people and talent developmental requirements within organizations. Everybody wished me very well and was very appreciative about the initiative. But Istill had not landed with any client for myself or my organization. I was also deliberating the idea to niche my practice and was thinking around the lines of Cross Culture and Business Leadership, given my earlier experience in South East Asia.

This continued for a while, until, my Business Partner was able to get an opportunity for me to speak with a Business Leader in one of the Indian Multinationals. I met the leader and spoke to him passionately about the possibilities through Coaching and asked him about specific opportunities he saw for coaching within his organization. During the conversation, I understood that they were expanding their Agri business to South East Asian Markets and intuitively I decided to share my thoughts on how Coaching can expand possibilities for their South East Asia Leaders in new markets and how Cross Cultural Diversity Coaching can support this growth for them.

I remember walking out of the meeting from their office in Connaught Place, New Delhi, with my First Coaching Engagement with their Country Managers for Vietnam and Indonesia.

The intuitive capabilities we posses helps us to constructively influence situations and provide win-win opportunities. I truly believe that #persuasion #Influence #negotiation and #storytelling are life skills that each one of us posses and we should be brave enough to use them. Sales skills are not just for #SalesProfessionals.
