When I was at the fag end of my first job, I was applying to different media houses in Delhi. The choice of the city was defined by the fact that I knew enough people there who could help me with adjustment. When I did land another job, the organisation told me that while the headquarters of the company was in Delhi, I had to work out of Mumbai—a city completely unknown to me. I had no acquaintances there and it was expensive for someone at the start of her career.
I reconsidered the offer and wondered if staying back was a better decision. I informed my then boss expecting him to discourage me.Much to my surprise, he said, “Why NOT this city if you want to move ahead for growth? If you don’t take a risk, how would you know what you CAN overcome?” That shifted my perspective and made me think harder about the stakes.
Even if the job didn’t work out, I would have learnt something and progressed in some ways. The city went on to become my second home. Till this day I am grateful to my boss and that leap of faith for leading me to a journey that taught me a lot about adaptability, resilience and most importantly, independence.
